When I set off
there was a page of very ambitious plans to sing in lots of churches and
schools. The reality has been quite different. Each year I have had song
material specially written by composers Orlando Gough and Steve Moran for
which I am enormously grateful.
YEAR 1. Lonon -
Cape Wrath. I steadfastly stopped in all of 300 churches on this trip. Some
had been prearranged and there were people to listen and join in a singing
event. If a church was closed I sang round the outside of it. I sang in 6
schools getting them involved in singing, told them what I was doing and
answered questions. Highlights were the great Parish churches of King's
Lynn, Great Yarmouth, Boston and Hull but in Scotland mostly they were
closed.
YEAR 2. Since the
churches were clearly less of a feature Orlando wrote me a piece called
'Howling at the Sea' which I sang on all the beaches so the audience was
largely sea birds and seals. I had a BBC Radio Scotland reporter who
interviewed me ona beach and recorded the song which was broadcast. I also
sang at a Camphill home near Dumfries and at an open air Sea Sunday event
at Harrington Docks with the Bishop of California present!
YEAR 3. This year
I'm going to sing whilst crossing rivers, streams and estuaries and am
hoping to sing at Atlantic College in Wales and at the Bristol Steiner
School and at the moment who knows where else!
